The Boys & Girls Club of the Monroe Area began in 1996 when a group of concerned citizens came together to discuss the pressing needs of the youth of Monroe County. Approximately 50 community leaders led by Dr. David Kefauver and the Honorable Curwood Witt met to discuss the importance and urgency of providing a safe, educational and fun environment for our children. Several possibilities were explored, including a YMCA, a Community Center, and a Boys & Girls Club. When the Boys & Girls Club of America was contacted, those involved were very impressed with the concept, the programs and the mission of the Club. They were also impressed with the level of support the organization was willing to provide. It was from that research and exploration that the Boys & Girls Club of the Monroe Area was formed. During those early meetings, a Board of Directors consisting of 45 members was assembled. The Honorable Curwood Witt presided as the first President. The goal was set to quickly establish Boys & Girls Clubs in each of the four towns that make up Monroe County. Ten years later, the current Board of Directors consists of 21 members, with four remaining founders: Dr. David Kefauver, Ellen Dash, Jim Wilson and Dean Littreal. Melanie Phillips, Executive Director, was also a member of the original Board of Directors formed in 1996. The last ten years have proven to be a decade of continued growth for the Boys & Girls Club of the Monroe Area. New Clubs were established, much-needed additional staff was added, exciting new programs were developed and expanded, and more than 1,400 children annually have been served. The Boys & Girls Club of the Monroe Area: *is a private, non-profit agency with policy set by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of local residents. *is managed by a full-time Executive Director, assisted by full-time career professionals, part-time assistants and program staff and volunteers. *is a professionally-staffed, fully equipped facility offering daily programs promoting the health, social, educational, vocational and character development of youth ages 5-18. *makes a positive impact on young lives by building self-esteem and encouraging the development of values and skills.
