Teens learn a-MAZE-ing life lessons

article posted 05/22/2013

MADISONVILLE-Hundreds of teens from Monroe County and across the region learned important life lessons in a very realistic way, but without ultimately having to suffer the consequences of poor choices.
It was all through the Boys & Girls Club of the Monroe Area's award winning Teen Maze. The Boys & Girls Club of recently received the National Merit Award, (a top award in the nation) for the outstanding Teen Maze program.

"The Maze is made up of 30 rooms, and is staffed by professional and knowledgeable volunteers from around our county. Heather Rhymes is the director and mastermind behind our Teen Maze. We applaud Heather's great work in refining the basic maze, for creating an incredible experience for area youth, and for getting the Monroe County recognized at the national level," said Dr. Anthony Tricoli, interim director of the Boys & Girls Club of the Monroe Area.

The maze was recently set up in the Hiwassee College gymnasium with hundreds of students going through the rooms that depict real-life situations.

With the maze program, the teens are challenged with temptations like sexual activity, drugs, tobacco and alcohol. Spinning the "Wheel of Choice" either sends them to college or not, results in a pregnancy or not, and an entire litany of other real-life outcomes.
